Floral Oil Still Life

"Summer Medley"Oil on Linen, 24 1/2" x 20"

It's been a beautiful summer up here in the great Northwest. And though I haven't posted (my bad), I've been busy. Although I'm noted among my friends for having a black thumb and I have trouble growing them, I still love to paint flowers. This one took a while between family visits and other things - among them plumbing woes.

I'm proud to announce that I am a new artist at Gallery 9 in Port Townsend, WA. I showed for the first time this past Saturday for the Port Townsend Gallery Walk. If you get out that way, come and visit. It's a beautiful gallery with a great stable of fine artists.

Still Life, Red Cherry Pitcher

"The Cherry Pitcher"Oil on Linen

I purchased this pitcher mainly because I liked it's color and wanted to challenge myself to paint it. Red is a particularly difficult color to do well. Too much background color in it and it looks dull or muddy, too much Naples Yellow or White on the lit side leads to pasty looking pink. Although it's not so much the exact color/temperature that gets you there, it's the color/temperature relationship. Either color used in isolation will look off. It's when they're juxtaposed to each other that they come alive and it all sings. I was happy overall with the way this painting turned out, I felt my edges were working for me and the shadows on the lace were just right. What do you think?

Rhododendron Oil Painting, 9" x 12" on Canvas Panel

"Rhodie and Persian Rug"SOLD

There's a Rhododendron bush on the walking path I take about every other day and it's been calling my name. I pictured it against my red Persian run that sits in my entry hall. The rug is 15 feet long. It was a real chore to drag that thing into my studio, roll it up and drape about five feet of it over the backdrop I use in my set ups. But it was worth it. What'cha think?
