LANDSCAPE
Landscape painting connects me to the earth. When I was a child, I would spend hours alone roaming the local woods and fields. I could sit under a tree for longIM periods engrossed in examining the life around me. I always took off my shoes and sometimes would just comb my fingers through the soil. Today landscape painting brings me back to those times. I try to bring a sense of place to a piece. Often the light or color takes a romantic turn as I strive to bring a memory or feeling to the work. Landscape tends to be painted a little looser as far as my style is concerned. I don't know why this is. My handwriting changes according to the mood I suppose. Each painting tells me what it needs.

Situated on Clayloch Beach on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, this tree is a tourist attraction. It sits between two clif sides, the roots hanging on the sides and the rest falling beneath in empty space. When the sun is behind the tree, it is quite spectacular. This is a contemporary rendition but the tree remains realistic as nothing can quite describe it as well as reality.

Clouds. Who doesn't like clouds? This summer, we had an amazing display of clouds here in the northwest. I had to grab my camera and run out to capture as many as I could. It's funny too - I still find myself looking for shapes in them even after I've painted them.

Sunsets are the time of day when the creator pulls out a paintbrush and runs it across the sky. It's the time when the world takes a deep breath for a sigh of completion. "The day is sufficient unto itself." We all need to end the day no matter how good or how bad. It's our sign to put the day away and rest for the morrow.

Do you fish? I used to before the schedule of being a working artist took over my life. Mostly I remember thinking as the day wore on and I knew I had to pack up, that if I just did one more cast, it might be the magic moment in which I would make my best catch. When I painted this piece, I knew I had to add something to the painting. It's difficult to see in the picture here but there's a couple of figures fishing with seagulls swooping around them. The storm is approaching. But all that fisherman wants is one more cast.

Trees to me are nature’s sculptures. They are almost human in the way they rise from the landscape, stretching toward the sky. They evoke feelings of both grandeur and humility. Oaks are especially expressive. They stretch out over the ground while simultaneously reaching upward. They command attention. This one was inspired by a 400 year old California Live Oak.

Ever hear of Dungeness Crab? It comes from right here where I live in Washington. The Dungeness River flows right through Sequim, Washington and empties into the Straits of Juan De Fuca. There are a quite a few favorite fishing spots along the river. One that is a favorite also doubles as a swimming hole for the youngsters in our town. This spot is a favorite painting spot as well. This is a plein air piece (painted on location) on a summer day.

This painting is purely from imagination. I don't usually paint without a reference but this image was with me upon awakening one day and I came to realize after several days that it was asking to be painted. It must be a real place - but where? Do you recognize it? The image didn't leave my head until the painting was finished.

Inspired by the image of the Wizard Nebula from the James Webb Telescope, this painting was created using only oil paint and brushes. No AI or Air Brush. Just brushes. Oh yeah…also a toothbrush.
