FIGURE/PORTRAIT
I am a classically trained painter and much of my academic career was spent studying the figure and portraiture. I especially enjoy painting the nude but I also love the figure in general. It's often said by teachers and artists that if you can paint the figure, you can paint anything. Well, maybe or maybe not. But it's still the most challenging subject for painters and I love a good challenge.

Previously my figures were strongly of a classical nature and highly realistic. While this still holds true for my portraits, my romantic figures are changing. “At the Window” is a romantic figure in an expressionist, contemporary style which I have been exploring. She is painted in a high key and the feel of the window to her right is just that - an impression. She’s at rest and one can only muse on what she must be thinking.

Part of a new series of contemporary figurative paintings, “Mirror Gazing” represents a departure from my previous classical paintings. While portraits and commissions remain highly realistic, these romantic paintings are more ethereal and suggest a story.
”Mirror Gazing” is a Romantic image of a young woman gazing into a mirror which is just barely suggested in the painting. She could be anyone. What do you imagine she is thinking?

This painting is mixed media. The figure is surrounded by natural leaves that are suspended in paper and sealed in an acrylic compound and then glazed in oils. The figure itself is painted in Oils.
Autumn is my favorite season. The colors surround me in my home and wardrobe so when I decided on the theme for this piece, it was only natural that I choose these colors. The model was so pleased with this painting that when I showed it for the first time, she attended the show and stood in front of it. Funny though - no one recognized her with her clothes on.

For me, mornings are a quiet time. It's that interval just after we've risen and before the sounds of an awakening world intercede on our thoughts. Its a chance to gather ourselves before we are pulled into the frenzy of a new day. I think I caught that here.

I run a life drawing group for myself and friends one day a week. This piece was painted during one of these sessions. I like the freshness of this piece as it was done alla prima, all be it in two sessions rather than one.

Anna is one of my models and I painted this as a study for a larger piece. I like the fresh feeling and skin tones that I achieved here.

I love the work of the Dutch masters. Most classical painters do. This painting of another artist who posed in costume, was painted with images from those giants dancing in my mind. I was aiming for detail here and painted a great deal more than I generally aim for in a figure. But I sure had fun with it.

This painting of a pregnant young woman was inspired by a brief moment. My model who was quite pregnant at the time, was modeling for another job and during her break stood at my large north facing window. It was raining but the gloomy day failed to ruin her mood. She was in a dreamy place. You can imagine what thoughts were dancing in her head as she gazed out, unmindful of the weather.
